5 things you can do for your Mom’s back this Mother’s Day…

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Mom’s work harder than pretty much anyone, and their backs often pay the price. This Mother’s Day, why not do something practical for her, which will help save her back throughout the year. Here are 5 things you can do for your Mom’s back this Mother’s Day:

-Invite your mom to pick a day, and help her organize her closet- putting the most frequently used items at non-bending, non-reaching height. Get her a back-of-the-door shoe bag (Target $9) to get her shoes off the floor so she won’t have to bend all the way to the floor first thing in the AM to get at them.

-If it is geographically possible, pick one day a week when you can take a good long walk with your Mom. As always, if you rest- you rust, so getting out there will help burn a few calories, mobilize your spine and other joints, and give you an opportunity to reconnect.

-If your Mom is like mine, her refrigerator is full of all kinds of stuff she doesn’t even remember is there- forcing her to stand hunched by the fridge door hunting for what she actually needs. Grab a bag and ditch everything in there that’s not been used in more than a while, anything you cannot identify, and anything you don’t anticipate using (The folks at IKEA had you pretty well convinced that lingonberry jam would become a part of your daily breakfast!) When the stuff you don’t want is gone, give some thought to organizing what you do want in ways that make sense, and minimize the deep bending.

-One of my favorite tips- one which I cannot stress enough: If your Mom carries a briefcase,  handbag or purse, encourage her to take a moment and purge the contents of anything that she doesn’t absolutely need. My briefcase routinely accumulates so much extra junk- and that junk weighs a LOT. DECLUTTER!

-If the weather is good this Sunday, take a few minutes, and wash your Mom’s car. Honestly, when is the last time she did it?

My best wishes to all of the Moms out there- I hope you all have a fantastic Mother’s Day.

Insurance nightmares…

I’ve read some of your stories about difficulties with health insurance, and it is amazing what some of you have endured. Please continue to send in your thoughts and comments on this topic. Again, I know this is not strictly a back pain issue, but as it seems to affect pretty much everyone, it warrants some discussion.

I am currently putting the finishing touches on the insurance nightmares piece. Check in on Monday. In this post I will share with you some of our recent experiences, and then provide you some tips for helping resolve issues with your health insurance carrier.

Tips for mass transit…

On Wednesday, look for a new post on ways to make your commute on mass transit more back friendly.

Thanks for stopping in. Have a great Mother’s Day, and a fantastic weekend.

Be Well,

Ice versus heat for back & neck pain, sciatica, and other painful areas…

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

At least a few times a day, patients ask me about whether they should be using ice or heat to help relieve their back pain. It’s a good question, and unfortunately, if you asked 10 doctors, you might get 10 different explanations for why one is better than the other.

There is only one steadfast rule regarding ice & heat: For the first 48 hours immediately following an injury, ice is better. Ice causes some vasoconstriction (the reduction in the diameter of the blood vessels) in the area being treated, helping to reduce swelling and promote healing. It also can partially numb the area for a short time, providing some pain relief.

In this doctor’s opinion, after the first 48 hours, it boils down to a matter of personal preference. Ice provides some of the pain relieving benefits, but heat can help to relax tense muscles- so there are potential benefits to either. Personally, my muscles recoil from cold and send me right into spasm, so I cannot really tolerate ice- so for me it’s heat, but I hear the opposite from plenty of people as well.

The one recommendation I will make here is to limit the time of either. If you are using ice, wrap your bag of ice in a thin towel or napkin so the cold gets applied gradually, and without ‘shock.’ Apply for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off. With heat, the timing is not as critical, but prolonged heat can cause too much relaxation to the area, will cause vasodilation (an increase in the diameter of the blood vessels in the injured area,) and if there is still some underlying inflammation- could increase swelling. So 20 on and 20 off here is probably a good rule as well.

Hope this helps!

Insurance nightmares…

Last week, I asked you to share with me some of your health insurance nightmares. My wife and I have been dealing with a pretty complicated problem, which thankfully seems to be largely resolving. I am amazed by how many of you have had serious issues with your health insurance. I am preparing a piece or two on this topic- not strictly a back pain thing, but I felt important enough to discuss here on BackWords. Check back.

As always, thanks for visiting,

Andy
