Merry Christmas, and some thoughts for your New Year’s Resolution…

Friday, December 25th, 2009

I want to extend wonderful holiday wishes to all of you! I hope this season brings you much joy and happiness.

Now is the perfect time to start thinking about New Year’s resolutions. For many of my viewers, the holidays are a reminder of all of the ways in which back pain has compromised their quality of life. This would be a great time to begin thinking about some of the lifestyle issues which may be contributing to your discomfort, and resolving to take steps to make them right. Back pain can frequently come from numerous cumulative factors- and your home & workplace ergonomics, exercise routine, and general frame of mind all contribute in their own way to whether you feel good or bad.

Let me share with you my two New Years resolutions, and then make a suggestion for you to add to yours;

1) 2010 will be the year I get my fitness back in order. I found some extra weight during my residency, which I have been in a constant battle to get rid of. This will be the year.

2) I will continue to try and improve the ways in which I try to help my patients, my readers, and friends to get rid of their back pain. I will continue to offer tips and suggestions here on the blog and through my programs to help as many people as possible to feel GREAT!

My suggestion to you, is that you make this the year to create a spine friendly life- look at you home, your workplace, you body, and your mind- and try to optimize all you can. The cumulative effect of your efforts will clearly pay off.

All my best, and Happy Holidays!!

Follow up on Bras, new Domain, The One Thing…

Follow-up on the Bra Piece from Tuesday.

Thank you so much for all of the great responses to yesterday’s post on properly fitting bras. The comments have been really great.

A few additional comments I received via facebook & email:

“Don’t make the mistake of convincing yourself that a bra that is uncomfortable in the store will somehow become ‘broken in’ once you get home. If it isn’t right in the store, it won’t be right when you get home.”

-Susan

“Be sure to choose a bra appropriate for the situation- they make sports bras for a reason.”

-Jen

“If you are larger breasted like I am- choose a bra with wider straps which help distribute the weight of your breasts over a larger area of your shoulder, and prevent ‘digging in’.”

In the next couple of weeks, I will try to locate a bra fitting specialist who is 1) Willing to appear on camera, 2) Allowed by their employer to appear on camera, 3) May have some additional tips which may be helpful. If you are such a person- please drop me a line!

For the two guys who asked for ‘better pictures’- I think you are probably on the wrong site…

The One Thing Launches THURSDAY!

I have been planning this ongoing series of short videos for a while now. Starting tomorrow, I will be asking experts in different areas of back pain one question: If there was ONE THING you would recommend to people to prevent/eliminate back pain, what would it be? I am hoping that these occasional tips will come in handy. As they will be coming from different disciplines, such as physical therapy, physical medicine, chiropractic, orthopedics, and others- I am hoping they will give you varied and useful perspectives on back pain.

Tomorrow’s guest is Debra Rasansky of Rasansky Physical Therapy in Bala Cynwyd, PA. I hope you will tune in!

All my best- and be well!!!

Holiday Shopping Reminded Me of Something…

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009
Over 50 percent of women are wearing the wrong sized bra.

Over 50 percent of women are wearing the wrong sized bra.

Like many people, much of my time over the past couple of weeks has been spent trying to find the ‘perfect gift’ for everyone on my list. I’m actually doing pretty well, considering I have been booked with every manner of work and family obligation imaginable for what feels like months on end.

My travels landed me in a well known lingerie chain trying to find something nice for my wife. Lest you say ‘well that’s only a gift for you then, isn’t it?’- I will preface by saying to all of you cynics that she actually made some specific wardrobe requests this year- so HA!

In any case, I have witnessed at least two men, trying to explain their spouse/girlfriends sizes in very subjective terms (one actually did reference fruit!) in an effort to purchase something close to the correct size. This experienced reminded me of something which I referenced in my book, and which I think warrants some attention right about now…

Ladies, you are probably wearing the wrong sized bra.

In 2002, while I was preparing materials for a draft manuscript, my practice performed an informal study of 150 women in my practice, and that of a friend of mine who works in a large hospital practice. In the study, I asked female medical students who were taught the correct techniques for bra sizing from ‘fitting experts’ at a major department store and a lingerie specialty store- to measure this sample of our patients.

Surprisingly, more than 50% of the women in the study were wearing the wrong size bra, and of those over 70% had a somatic dysfunction (a problem with the mechanics of the spine) at or near the level where their bra crossed over their bra.

Furthermore, when questioned ahead of time, most women were confident that they were wearing the correct size, and most had a favorite brand which supposedly got their size more ‘right’ than other brands. Many women were fitted in their late teens, and basically stuck with the same size since then.

I strongly recommend getting a fitting from someone who knows what they are doing. Many department stores have fitting ‘events’ where several manufacturers send expert fitters.

Men, if you are shopping for lingerie for your wife or girlfriend perhaps include a fitting in the gift- then you can give her a gift which will last much longer. Of course, gentlemen, if you are buying lingerie for yourself, proper fitting is probably not as critical.

Hope the holiday season is treating you all well!

Best,

Andy

Pregnancy & Back Pain: Part 1- The Cause

Monday, November 30th, 2009

This is the first part of a series on back pain during pregnancy. Last week I posted a request for topics and questions on my Facebook page. The most common inquiry I received was about back pain during pregnancy. My own sister posted the following on my page:

“My worst back pain ever was during pregnancy — my OBGYN gave me drugs because I was in so much pain (I drove over 300 miles in 2 days, my back would have been tender if I wasn’t pregnant) but then Scott used some of the techniques from Back Together to help ease my tender back and make it feel much better. You’re a great big bro and a great doctor!”

I am grateful for the complement Julie! Your story is not too different from many I hear. Depending on whose study you reference, anywhere between 50-80% of women develop back pain during pregnancy. I should mention that the techniques you used were from a pre-release manuscript (The Back Together book on bookstore shelves is definitively NOT for pregnancy related back pain.)

In this series, I will cover the causes of pregnancy related back pain, some suggestions for preventing and relieving it, and end with some hands-on techniques you and a partner can do to reduce it.

Enjoy!

Some Post Thanksgiving Thoughts

Monday, November 30th, 2009

London was fantastic! I have had a week to recover from the trip and from my jet lag. I will have some more posts from the trip and some other goodies later this week.

Last week was the Thanksgiving Holiday here in the States, and I though it would be a nice time to be a little reflective. When you are walking around in pain, it can be hard to feel thankful for anything- I was in a nasty car wreck two days before Thanksgiving when I was a medical intern, and I know I was not in a festive mood.

I posted a ‘what are you grateful for?’ post on my Facebook page, and some of the responses were remarkable. I was really happy to be able to read all of the things which people felt thankful for. I feel like I needed to post this one here on BackWords:

“I an truly grateful for you, Andy. You gave me back movement and reduced pain. You helped return my youth and restored hope for days of less pain. And you did all of it not just with technique, but with patience and compassion. :-)

-Colleen

I wanted to cry when I read this. When I first met Colleen, she had just began to recover from  pretty terrible accident, and had serious doubts about whether she would ever feel better again. I am am so grateful to be able to help people to feel better. It is truly a gift that I receive almost every day. Thank you, Colleen, for reminding me of this.

Now, back to the idea of feeling grateful…

When you are feeling pain pretty much all the time, it can become the focus of your life, and it can be easy to forget about all of the positive things you may have going on in your life. Friendships, family, work, other experiences- all may be providing benefits to your life which you can lose site of because of your pain. During this holiday season, I will ask each and every one of you to take a moment or two out of each day, and focus on the things which are going right rather than the things which aren’t- which in this case, if you are checking in on my blog, may be back pain. When those feelings of pain are compounded with all of the other stressors which can effect you during the holidays, it can make matters worse.

Sometimes simply bringing some of those positive ideas back into focus can help you to feel less pain. Just something to consider.

I have had several requests for information about pregnancy and back pain- look for some video tomorrow.

Have a great holiday season, and BE WELL!

Update from London, Sex, Muscle Spasm & Umbrellas…

LiveinLondon

Again, I am not doing a travel blog (heaven knows I don’t travel enough to support that sort of endeavor)- but there is an addition at the end of this video posting about a remarkable shop I visited here in London- James Smith & Sons- an umbrella shop which stocks literally thousand of umbrellas, and will cut one to a custom length to accommodate your height. A really fantastic service based experience- the men working there have obviously been doing this for years and take great pride in the work they do. Check the store out if you ever have an opportunity. You can see their website: http://www.james-smith.co.uk/

Sex & Back Pain

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Back pain can have an adverse effect on just about every aspect of your life. Unfortunately one of the first things which gets pushed by the wayside when back pain sets in is sexual intercourse. Here are some thoughts on dealing with back pain while trying to still enjoy the pleasures of intimacy.

I am still working on the aspect ratio problem, and it should be fixed by the next post.

The book mentioned- “The Joy of Comfortable Sex” by Dr. Pierre Angier is available from Amazon.com. Here’s a direct link to the purchase page:
