Frigid Return from Florida, Info on the Tip o’ the Day (B.T.T.o.D)

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Well, we pulled into the driveway at the end of our return trip from Florida- opened the door and were treated to Arctic temperatures- I always wonder why we don’t all pick up and move south…

The trip was great- I shot some video which I will spread out here over the next few weeks. I met with my friend Jorden Gold from the Stretch Zone, who provided us his ‘One Thing’ which I will post later today.

I was supposed to start the Back Together Tip o’ the Day  (B.T.T.o.D.) yesterday, but alas, could not find a functioning WiFi spot ANYWHERE on I95- If anyone wants a great business idea- provide wireless internet along I95- you’ll clean up!!! (I want a percentage for thinking of it…)

In any case, the B.T.T.o.D. will start today. I have tied todays’ tip to Jorden’s post. Each day, Monday through Friday, I will try to provide you one back pain prevention or relief tip. For the week, I will try to establish a theme. This weeks theme is: POSTURE.

I hope you find these tips helpful and enjoyable.

All my best, and stay warm!!!

Dr. Kirschner and Back Together- LIVE at the Royal Albert Hall!!!

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

OK, so I was at the Royal Albert Hall, and I was live, and I did have a copy of Back Together with me.  So I was stretching it a little- but with your continued support of Back Together, maybe someday…

Travel was uneventful- I utilized my own back pain prevention tips as outlined in my previous post- and alas got off the plane with no back pain. Interestingly there were two other physician going to the same conference who did NOT. They carried wrong, sat wrong, and slept in every  twisted way they could. While one of them arrived fine, the other, whom I shared a cab ride with confessed that he had chronic back pain, and was worse off following the trip. Now, keep in mind this is a physician who treats back pain-he proceeded to tell me that there really was nothing he could do about it.

If you are familiar with my work and writing, you already know that I firmly believe that there is very little in the back pain world which is immune to treatment of some sort. I really did not like hearing (from a physician no less)  that there was nothing he could do about it. I parted with one of the two copies of my book which I brought with me, and asked him to email me in a couple of months to report on his progress. I will keep you posted.

Tomorrow, I will be doing a video interview with an critical care nurse who works here in London. She has had extensive exposure to the British approach to nationalized health care, as well as the Australian system- which has a need-threshold system of distribution. Perhaps will share some insights into some of the things we in America seem to have anxiety about.

I look forward to hearing your questions and comments. As always, be well.

Thank you for your support! Announcements, and contest coming.

I am so excited by the response to Back Together, and especially to our new DVD program!!!

In December, I will be premiering my new blog series ‘The One Thing’ where I will be asking experts in the field of back pain what is the number one recommendation they have to prevent or relieve back pain. These experts will be coming from fields such as physical therapy, exercise, orthopedics, chiropractics, and others.

In anticipation of the new series, I am asking viewers to send me their ‘One Thing.’ What one thing have you found helps with your back pain? The flip side of that is what things have you found which makes it worse? Your responses will appear in BackWords- the Back Together Blog at www.backtogether.org. Please submit your responses to me at our facebook fanpage, or here at the blog.I cannot wait to hear what you have to say.

And as a thank you to all of Back Together’s supporters, I will be holding our first Back Together Stories contest, where we will be asking Back Together participants to share their best stories of how Back Together helped them and/or their relationships. The winning entry will win a trip for two to Miami Beach, Florida and receive a day of one-to-one Back Together Training with me! Contest rules and information will be posted in January- Check the facebook fan page or backtogether.org/blog for more information as it becomes available.

Again, thanks for your support,

A Personal Message to Ed Rendell About Malpractice insurance.

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Dear Governor Rendell,

I am one of the dwindling numbers of solo practitioners in the Philadelphia area. Each day, I provide family medical care and back pain care to people from around the Delaware Valley.

Like many physicians, I am very frustrated by the current medical malpractice insurance situation here in Pennsylvania. PA physicians face some of the highest malpractice premiums in the country, while being reimbursed lower than national average for services provided.

Each day I work in my office, I have calculated that the first five hours of each day go towards paying my overhead- a disproportionate amount of which is appropriated by my malpractice insurance costs. Part of that cost is the mCare premium- an expense which physicians in other states do not need to incur. Now, my understanding was that this additional premium, paid by me and every physician in the state, was to cover awards and expenses not covered by our regular insurance premium. I was also lead to understand that this mCare fund was created to keep MP insurance carriers in the state, and supposedly to keep our premiums from continuing to rise. On the first point, of course it kept them here- they got to keep more of their profits. Clearly, it has failed on the second count, as my insurance is roughly 30% higher than my friend is paying for the same coverage in Delaware.

So, while there may have been some legerdemain which justified the existence of the fund in the first place, there is no cover up or trick which you can use to justify the actions regarding the fund in the past month or so.

When physicians learned that there was a surplus of funds in the mCare coffers, and that you decided to direct those funds into the general budget to cover non-physician related costs, some said it was tantamount to theft.

It is not tantamount to theft- it is theft. Plain and simple, and you sir, are the thief.

Now, while I understand that you have no one to answer to, as you are not seeking re-election, you could have made the just and honest choice to waive the mCare fees, and/or return some of this ill-gotten money to the physicians who have worked so hard in your state to earn it. Instead, you chose to provide yet another reason for more doctors to flee this state in droves. I train student physicians and residents, and when I ask them where they would like to practice when they finish their training, they almost universally reply; “Anywhere but here.” This will result in a shortage of care in this state- and it will be your responsibility.

How long will physicians be willing to pay a tax for the privilege of practicing medicine in one of the most medically hostile environments in the country? I don’t know. How many physicians will be willing to pay the premium when they are sent their 2010 bill? I don’t know that either. What I do know is that you are rolling the dice , and the well being of Pennsylvania’s citizens is what’s at stake.

How about doing the right thing here. It’s not too late to fix what could be a catastrophic mistake.

Dr. Kirschner with the hosts of City Watch on WBAI 99.5FM in NY.

Just returned from New York, where I taped a 90 minute segment for WBAI 99.5FM’s pledge drive. As an avid supporter of independent radio, I donated books and DVDs as pledge premiums. Thank you again to Bich Ha Pham for inviting me onto City Watch. The show will broadcast next Wednesday- If you are outside of NYC you can hear it streaming on WBAI.org. I will post the time as soon as I have it.

Wednesday, I will be on the 10! Show in Philadelphia, 11AM on NBC channel 10 to introduce the DVD and provide some couples tips for back pain just in time for Valentine’s Day.
