A quick note about the sleep tip from yesterday….

So last night I was deluged with emails (ok- I got eight about the sleep tip from yesterday, and then four more about the study linking smoking to back pain.)

I know that in the early 21st century, there are lots of people who simply are not getting sufficient sleep, and I also know that there are myriad reasons why folks aren’t getting enough sleep. I also know that there are plenty of folks who smoke, and that most of them have all kinds of reasons  (excuses) why they still smoke. When I make a suggestion like the one about sleep, or I cite a study about something- I AM NOT BEING ACCUSATORY!

When I set up my website & blog, I set out to provide the best information on back pain that I can in an effort to improve the quality of life of people who have back pain. When I find an article which I think provides useful, helpful knowledge- I’m going to pass it along. One of the emails I got was from someone who I know personally, who was convinced that I posted the smoking article in order to make a dig at them. I received an email from a mother of 2 who related the following;

“I have 2 small children and work full time. I leave the house at 7AM to get my children to child care and I usually don’t get home until after 7PM, when I prepare dinner for my husband, clean the house, pay bills, or do whatever else I need to do which can’t get done during the day. I have back pain pretty much every day. I’ve been told to get regular exercise, lose weight (all) of the things doctors are supposed to be telling me to do in an effort to lose weight. Now you are telling me I need to get sleep? I feel lost. You seem to have all the answers- what should I do?”

Anyone who knows me, knows that I take pretty much everything personally- so you can imagine how I must have felt when I read this. But, anyone who knows me ALSO knows that I never tell anyone that I have all the answers.

If I post something that is counter to your experience, beliefs, or capabilities- please do not take it as a personal affront. I really want to see this site develop as a forum, as a dialogue  -between us, in an effort to better understand the nature of back and neck pain, and then learn productive ways to get relief, and keep it from coming back.

To the woman I quote above- I don’t have all of the answers. What I hope is that you will stick around here long enough to find some of the gems posted here by me and some of my colleagues- and that they will help you to find relief. Not everything I post here will apply to everybody- but some of it will eventually apply to you.

Hope to hear from you soon!

B.T.T.o.D: Regular, quality sleep will help reduce back pain.

Monday, January 11th, 2010

It can be so easy to fall behind in your sleep. There are so many distractions and obligations in our lives, that sleep is frequently not considered a priority. There are numerous studies, and TONS of anecdotal evidence that regular sleep is essential in reducing back pain and it’s effect on your life.

Here are a couple of considerations with regards to sleep and back pain:

1) Make sure you are sleeping on a supportive mattress. Also, be sure your mattress isn’t too old- even a top-brand mattress will eventually become less supportive with age.

2) On days that you exercise, try to have at least 4 hours between exercise and sleep, and on those exercise days be particularly defensive of your sleep- that is essential to your exercise recovery.

3) Avoid sleeping on your stomach. If you sleep on your back, keep a pillow under your knees. If you sleep on your side, keep a small pillow between your knees to keep your hips in a neutral position.

Here is a great article by Dr. Frank Lipman on Huffington Post about how to get better quality sleep by paying attention to common sleep mistakes. It doesn’t address back pain, but anything that helps you to get better sleep will have a payoff in less back pain.

Be well,

-Andy

Back pain and your mattress…

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

Recorded live from The Pines, Fire Island. Sorry for the wind noise AND the messed up aspect ratio- still working out the kinks.

Choosing a new mattress can be a daunting experience. There are so many choices out there. Here are some basic thoughts on mattresses and sleep in general. Above all, sleep is a very personal thing, so whenever possible, purchase a mattress from a company with a liberal exchange policy so you don’t get stuck with a lemon.

Best,
Andy

Sorry for the delay here- a really bad cold knocked my voice out for nearly a week. It’s remarkable how bad a cold can make you feel- I haven’t had one like this in years, so am am particularly grateful for being back on my feet.
Stay tuned this week for some responses to some great viewer questions. On Friday I will provide a recap of the whole top 10 for those joining in the middle. Thanks for visiting!

Viewer Question: Back Pain and the Weather

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Barbara submitted this question: I’m curious about connections that may exist between the weather and back pain (and pain in general caused by fibromyalgia and arthritis, which my partner has). It always seems like changes in the weather, or severely cold weather, or precipitation of any kind increases my partner’s pain. What’s this all about? And is there anything we can do to mitigate the pain ahead of time, like after checking the weather forecast but before the weather event has happened?

Well you definitely do not need me to confirm that weather does indeed have an effect on how your partner feels. Both joint pain and fibromyalgia/myofascial pain can be exacerbated by changes in the weather.

As it pertains to arthritis, the pain seems to be specifically related to drastic changes in barometric pressure. The question of how these changes influence fibromyalgia is a little more complicated.

Fibromyalgia pain can be worsened by changes in temperature (up or down) changes in barometric pressure, and humidity. And to make matters worse, there seems to be a correlation to length of day (similar to that experienced by persons with seasonal affective disorder or SAD.) In fact, these and other factors make up parts of the calculations resulting in the daily ‘pain index’ which can help persons with fibromyalgia estimate how their symptoms will play out over the following several days.

SInce controlling the weather is not really an option (unless you do what many ‘fibromites’ do and move to someplace where the climate is more consistent than Philadelphia) there are a few other things you can do:

1) Regardless of the weather conditions, make efforts to remain active- stretching, walks- anything which helps to maintain mobility.

2) HYDRATE!!!! Good hydration can help to clear many of the cellular waste products which can aggregate in myofascial layers, resulting in trigger points. DRINK!

3) Make efforts to protect your sleep. Regular, uninterrupted sleep is one of the few things which fibromites consistently site as a source of relief.

4) Dress in order to maintain a reasonably consistent comfortable temperature, and adjust quickly when transitioning from inside to outside. This does not just hold true for going from a warm inside to a cold outside- going from a temperate outside to an overly air conditioned inside can be as bad or worse.

I hope this is helpful.

Fibromyalgia is such a complicated issue, and each individual has different means & methods of coping with the symptoms. Please share your experiences, successes and failures, with our viewers.

Thanks for your question Barabara!
