B.T.T.o.D: Lose the portable car seat, and carry your child in a sling or on-body carrier.

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Sure, those baby carriers that snap into your car to be used as car seats are an engineering feat, and they do serve two separate needs, but they are an ergonomic catastrophe. They weigh too much, place the weight of the seat and your child too far away from your center of gravity, and strain your upper and lower spine unnecessarily.  Added to that, many parents are schlepping around all manner of additional baby paraphernalia which weigh them down even more.

Try leaving the carrier in the car and investing a few bucks in a sling or Bjorn like carrier. They weigh next to nothing, place your child near your center of gravity, and have the added benefit of bringing your child up to eye level- fostering eye contact with you and those around you. This has been shown to be a really positive thing for a baby’s development.

B.T.T.o.D: Break up household tasks into manageable chunks.

Monday, January 25th, 2010

With all of the time restraints we all have on our lives, it can be tempting to try and squeeze an entire day’s worth of house cleaning and other chores into a single day. Rather than subject your spine to that much abuse, break up the chores into a few smaller more manageable chunks over a few days. That way everything gets done, but your back pays a minimal price. Be well!

B.T.T.o.D: Empty unnecessary contents from your purse or briefcase.

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

In keeping with yesterday’s tip about switching sides when you are carrying a briefcase or purse- here’s another simple and practical bit of advice: Dump the contents of your bag onto your kitchen table, and eliminate those things you don’t actually need to have with you. I am sure you probably have all kinds of stuff you don’t even remember you had in there. Reduce the weight of your bag, and you reduce the stress on your spine and shoulders!

B.T.T.o.D: Take your prescription medications as directed..

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

There is a frequently held belief, that if a little is good- more MUST be better, and you would be shocked how many patients adopt this stance with pain medications. Always take medications as directed. If you are not getting the results you are looking for, contact your physician.

B.T.T.o.D: Remaining adequately hydrated will help to reduce your back pain.

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Again, this may sound like an obvious one- but remarkably, most people do not drink enough fluids throughout their day. Keep in mind, DIET SODAS DO NOT COUNT. The adage about 8 glasses of water a day is a good one, and may have the added benefit of controlling your appetite if that has been an issue for you. Also, be sure to take in fluids which will replace your electrolytes- juices are a great place to start, provided you don’t overdo it as they are typically high in sugars.

Hydration will help to flush out toxins from your tissues, and deliver needed electrolytes to your muscle tissue, preventing fatigue and injury.

Jorden Gold’s ‘One Thing’

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Today Jorden Gold returns to BackWords to give us his ‘One Thing’;

Jorden Gold’s One Thing

All too often we move through our day, unaware of our own body mechanics. Jorden’s suggestion is to pay attention to the way you move, how you hold your posture, and how your body performs different activities. My Tip O’ the Day for today plays into this- take a couple of minutes each day to think about your mechanics, your posture, and the ergonomics of some of your activities- and make them better.

Enjoy!

B.T.T.o.D: January 5, 2009

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

My Back Together tip o’ the day is to take 2-3 minutes out of your day to think about your body mechanics. Think about how your posture was today and adjust it. Consider how you picked things up, how you put on your shoes- anything that required body movement, and use good ergonomic judgement to figure out ways to optimize them. Try setting an alarm on your cell phone to remind you until it becomes a habit!

Frigid Return from Florida, Info on the Tip o’ the Day (B.T.T.o.D)

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Well, we pulled into the driveway at the end of our return trip from Florida- opened the door and were treated to Arctic temperatures- I always wonder why we don’t all pick up and move south…

The trip was great- I shot some video which I will spread out here over the next few weeks. I met with my friend Jorden Gold from the Stretch Zone, who provided us his ‘One Thing’ which I will post later today.

I was supposed to start the Back Together Tip o’ the Day  (B.T.T.o.D.) yesterday, but alas, could not find a functioning WiFi spot ANYWHERE on I95- If anyone wants a great business idea- provide wireless internet along I95- you’ll clean up!!! (I want a percentage for thinking of it…)

In any case, the B.T.T.o.D. will start today. I have tied todays’ tip to Jorden’s post. Each day, Monday through Friday, I will try to provide you one back pain prevention or relief tip. For the week, I will try to establish a theme. This weeks theme is: POSTURE.

I hope you find these tips helpful and enjoyable.

All my best, and stay warm!!!

-Andy
